The weakness was found by the University of Michigan scientist. Instead of using brute force, they stressed the processor containing the authentication key by submitting it to voltage stress. Subsequent errors allowed scientists to reconstitute the key. The way to avoid such stress-based attack would be to modify CPU to make them insensitive to such voltage variation. Details in this PDF.
