Just installed the newly renamed iOS 4. As my iPhone Developer Center account expired a few weeks ago it wasn’t supposed to work. But it did. The requirement is to have the iTunes 9.2 beta.
First impressions:
- It feels a bit slower on my iPhone 3GS than the previous version of iPhone OS.
- The Notes application is finally usable – it automatically syncs with GMail or Mobile Me account. Once saved on the iPhone they will show up in GMail instantly.
- Love the new unified Inbox. This alone is worth the upgrade
- The camera zoom is good enough, adding a bit more functionality to the only camera I cary around all the time.
- The new folders feature works like a charm. My 10+ screens are now down to 3 and I have more apps installed. It was becoming completely unmanageable to keep track of my apps.
- Multitasking – Done right! Although I don’t think there were more than a couple of occasions when I missed this feature, it’s a welcome addition to iOS.
- Places in Photos – I love it!
- Homescreen Wallpaper – It sucks! I wish there was a way to avoid it (other than having a black image as my wallpaper)
In short – it’s the upgrade I was waiting for, plus some more. Hoping that Apple will make it a bit faster by the time they release the final version this month.
